New Year, New Bowl, Better Nutrition!
Share
The New Year is the perfect time to reset routines, build better habits, and give your dog a fresh start with the nutrition they deserve.
If you have been thinking about switching your dog onto a raw, natural diet, you are not alone. A lot of owners want to make changes but worry they will do it wrong, upset their dog’s tummy, or feel overwhelmed by all the information online.
That’s exactly why Lancashire Dog Treats is here - to make the whole thing feel simple and doable. Read on, then if you want help choosing the right meals, portions, or proteins, just pop into the shop and we will talk you through it.
Understanding What You’re Switching From
What your dog is eating right now shapes how you begin. If they’re on kibble, a fast switch tends to work best, a clean break rather than a slow mix‑and‑match. Dogs on cooked or cold‑pressed food can usually move straight over without skipping meals. And if you’re not sure what category your current food falls into, bring a photo of the bag into the shop and we’ll figure it out together.
Switching Adults vs Puppies
Adult dogs (12 months and up) usually do well with a simple 24‑hour fast before starting their new food. It gives the digestive system a reset and avoids mixing foods that digest at different speeds.
Puppies are a different story. They shouldn’t go long without food, so only skip one meal before switching. Their little bodies are growing fast, and keeping blood sugar steady is important. If your puppy is tiny, very young, or you’re just feeling unsure, come in and we’ll guide you safely.
Make sure to bring your dog in to get their weight checked in store for free and we can tailer their plan.

Choosing Proteins
A lot of owners think they must stick to one protein for weeks. For most dogs, that’s not necessary. Variety brings a wider range of nutrients and helps prevent fussiness later on.
The only time we’d start with a single protein is if your dog has a history of sensitive digestion. In that case, we stabilise first, then build variety once things are settled.
What to Expect in the First Few Days
It’s completely normal to see small changes as your dog adjusts. Stools may be softer, firmer, smaller, smellier all within the range of normal. They may drink a little less and get more excited about mealtimes. If anything feels off or continues longer than expected, don’t sit at home worrying. Pop in and we’ll help you tweak things.
Keep Treats Sensible
During the first week, keep treats natural and avoid lots of extras. It helps the gut settle into its new routine. If you’re training, we can recommend treats that work alongside raw feeding.
Portion Size Matters
Too much food can cause loose stools. Too little can leave your dog unsettled. Age, weight, activity level and body condition all play a part and we’re always happy to work out the right amount for your dog.
